What is the boho aesthetic?

Boho is a free-spirited style that mixes things from many places and eras. Nothing matches perfectly, and that is on purpose. It feels warm, collected and a little nomadic, like the room of someone who has traveled a lot and kept something from everywhere.

The word bohemian has described artists and writers living outside the mainstream since the 19th century. The modern look owes most to the hippie fashion of the late 1960s. It came back as "boho chic" in the mid 2000s, peaking around 2005, when festival style with suede boots, coin belts and maxi skirts was everywhere.

The boho color palette

Terracotta, mustard, olive, sand and rust. These are earth and spice colors. Many boho outfits and rooms add one jewel tone, like deep teal or plum, against the warm base.

How to dress boho

  • Tops: peasant blouses, embroidered tops, crochet tops, loose linen shirts.
  • Bottoms: tiered maxi skirts, flared jeans, wide-leg trousers in printed fabric.
  • Dresses: long floral or paisley dresses, wrap dresses.
  • Outerwear: suede fringe jackets, long cardigans, kimono-style jackets.
  • Shoes and details: leather sandals, suede ankle boots, layered necklaces, stacked rings, a wide-brimmed hat.

Three easy outfits: a tiered maxi skirt with a fitted tank and layered necklaces; flared jeans with a peasant blouse and suede boots; a long floral dress with a denim jacket and a wide hat.

Natural fabrics and handmade details matter. Many boho pieces come from markets, secondhand shops and makers, rather than chain stores.

Boho room ideas

Boho is one of the most popular room styles, and it is forgiving. Start with layered rugs, jute under a patterned kilim, then add plants, lots of them. A rattan chair, a macrame wall hanging, floor cushions and a low bed covered in textured throws complete the look. Warm light from paper or woven lamps keeps it cozy.

Boho vs cottagecore

Both love natural materials and flowers. Cottagecore is tidy, rural and English, with gingham, puff sleeves and a farmhouse kitchen. Boho is looser and more global, with fringe, rugs from many places and more jewelry.

Respect matters here too. Boho often borrows patterns and objects from specific cultures. Buying from the makers themselves, and knowing what a pattern or symbol means before you wear it, keeps the style honest.

Is boho your aesthetic?

If you love flea markets, festivals and a room with too many plants, it could well be. Take the aesthetic quiz to see your result, or the room quiz if it is your space you want to style.
