How to find your aesthetic

By The Aesthetic Quiz team Last reviewed

To find your aesthetic, collect pictures you love for a week, look for the colors, textures and shapes that keep repeating, then match them to a named style and test it on your clothes and your room. Here is how to do each step.

1. Start with a quick quiz

A quiz gives you a first name for your taste in a couple of minutes. Take the aesthetic quiz and note your top three, not just your winner. The second and third places often explain the parts of your taste that the first one misses.

Answer on instinct. If you catch yourself picking what you think you should like, go back and choose again.

2. Collect images for a week

Save anything that makes you stop: outfits, rooms, film stills, album covers, food, places. Use a phone album, a Pinterest board or screenshots. Do not judge while you collect. Aim for 50 to 100 images.

Include things outside fashion. The light in a café or the cover of a book can say as much about your taste as a jacket.

3. Look for what repeats

Now lay the images out together and look for patterns. Ask yourself:

  • Which three or four colors show up most?
  • Are the images light or dark, warm or cool, busy or calm?
  • Which textures repeat: wool, lace, denim, linen, leather, chrome?
  • Are the places old or new, rural or urban, tidy or lived in?

Write the answers down in a few words. "Dark, warm, wool, old buildings" is already most of the way to dark academia.

4. Match it to a named style

Compare your words with the list of aesthetics. You are looking for the closest match, not a perfect one. Named styles are useful because they come with ready-made ideas: what to wear, what to buy, what to put on the walls.

If two styles fit, that is normal. Pick the one that matches more of your images as your base.

5. Sort your closet

Take your clothes out and sort them into three piles: fits the style, works with it, does not fit. Most people find that the first pile is bigger than expected. Wear those pieces more often for two weeks and see how it feels.

For a closer look at outfits, try the aesthetic clothing quiz, which only asks about what you wear.

6. Change one thing in your room

Your room is the easiest place to test an aesthetic, because one change does a lot. Swap your bedding to a color from your palette, or change the light from a cold ceiling light to a warm lamp. The room aesthetic quiz suggests the first things to add.

7. Buy slowly, and make it yours

Do not buy a whole new wardrobe. Add one signature piece at a time, secondhand where you can. After a month you will know which parts of the style you love and which you only liked on a screen.

The goal is not to become a perfect example of a trend. It is to have a clear idea of what feels like you. Keep what works, drop what does not, and borrow freely from your second and third styles.

Signs you have found it

  • Getting dressed takes less time, because most things go together.
  • You walk past things in shops that you would have bought before.
  • Friends start sending you things that "look like you".
  • Your room and your clothes feel like they belong to the same person.

Not sure which style is yours? Twelve picture questions will tell you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to find your aesthetic?
A first answer takes minutes with a quiz. A style that feels truly yours usually takes a few weeks of saving images and trying things on.
What if I like two aesthetics that clash?
Pick one as your base and borrow one or two details from the other. Dark academia clothes with grunge boots, for example, is a real and wearable mix.
Do I need to buy new clothes to have an aesthetic?
No. Start by sorting what you already own, wear the pieces that fit the style more often and buy slowly, secondhand where you can.
