Coquette aesthetic
Coquette is a hyper-feminine aesthetic built on bows, lace, ruffles, pearls and soft pinks. It feels romantic and a little vintage, like a ballet dressing room or an old love letter.

What is the coquette aesthetic?
Coquette is French for a flirt, and the style plays with that idea: delicate, sweet and very deliberately girly. It mixes ballet, old Hollywood, French romance and Victorian lace into one look.
The aesthetic first grew on Tumblr in the early 2010s and spread widely on TikTok from around 2021. By 2023, satin bows were everywhere, tied on hair, bags, shoes and even phone cases. Its roots also reach back to earlier feminine styles, including Japanese Lolita fashion.
The coquette color palette
Coquette lives in ballet pink, white, cream and rose, with a deep raspberry or red for contrast. Pearl and soft gold work for jewelry. Black lace appears in a darker take on the style, which pairs pink with black for a more grown-up feel.
How to dress coquette
The key is texture and detail. One bow, one bit of lace and one soft color already make an outfit coquette.
- Tops: lace-trim camis, ruffled blouses, fitted cardigans with pearl buttons.
- Bottoms: ruffled mini skirts, pleated skirts, slip skirts in satin.
- Dresses: babydoll dresses, slip dresses, anything with a sweetheart neckline.
- Shoes: ballet flats, Mary Janes, kitten heels, white socks with lace.
- Details: satin hair bows, pearl necklaces, heart lockets, a tiny shoulder bag.
Three easy outfits: a white lace cami with a pink cardigan, jeans and ballet flats; a slip skirt with a fitted tee and a big satin bow; a babydoll dress with white socks and Mary Janes.
It is easy to overdo coquette. If an outfit starts to look like a costume, take one bow off.
Coquette room ideas
A coquette bedroom is soft and dreamy. A canopy or tulle over the bed is the classic centerpiece, with white or pink bedding and lots of pillows. Add bows to curtains, frames and the bed posts.
A vintage vanity or mirror, perfume bottles on a tray, a jewelry box and fresh flowers complete the look. Keep the light warm and low, with a pink glass lamp or fairy lights.
Coquette vs soft girl vs Y2K
Soft girl is cuter and more playful, with pastel rainbows and blush. Coquette is more romantic and old-fashioned, with lace and pearls. Y2K shares the pink, but it is shiny, sporty and loud, with chrome and butterflies instead of ribbons.
A fair note: some people have criticized parts of the coquette trend for leaning on imagery that makes adult women look childlike. Many fans keep the bows and lace and simply leave that part out.
