Y2K aesthetic

By The Aesthetic Quiz team Last reviewed

Y2K is the look of the late 1990s and early 2000s, back again. Low-rise jeans, baby tees, mini skirts, butterfly clips, tinted sunglasses, shiny fabrics and bright candy colors, worn with a lot of fun and very little restraint.

What is the Y2K aesthetic?

Y2K is short for the year 2000. At the time the name belonged to a feared computer bug. Now it stands for the whole era around the turn of the millennium: pop music, flip phones, chrome, early internet graphics and a big belief that the future would be shiny.

The revival started around 2020 and grew through the early 2020s, helped by TikTok and by Gen Z shopping for real 2000s pieces secondhand. One fashion researcher has linked its comeback to nostalgia during the pandemic and the uncertain years that followed.

The Y2K color palette

Bubblegum pink, baby blue, lilac, chrome silver and lemon yellow. Metallics and iridescent finishes are part of the palette too. Y2K is the one aesthetic in this list where more color is usually better.

How to dress Y2K

  • Tops: baby tees, halter tops, cropped zip hoodies, tops with rhinestone text.
  • Bottoms: low-rise flared jeans, cargo pants, denim or pleated mini skirts, velour track pants.
  • Shoes: platform sandals, chunky sneakers, platform flip-flops.
  • Accessories: butterfly clips, small shoulder bags, tinted sunglasses, body chains, chokers.
  • Beauty: glossy lips, frosted eyeshadow, thin brows if you are brave.

Three easy outfits: a baby tee with low-rise flares and platform sneakers; a halter top with a denim mini and a shoulder bag; a matching velour tracksuit with tinted sunglasses.

The easiest place to start is a small shoulder bag and a baby tee. Both work with clothes you already own.

Y2K room ideas

A Y2K room is playful and a little plastic. An inflatable or bubble chair, a fluffy rug, a lava lamp and a wall covered with magazine pages and photo-booth strips set the mood. Add pastel paint, chrome or see-through furniture and a beaded curtain.

Y2K vs coquette vs streetwear

Coquette shares the pink but is romantic and vintage, with lace and bows. Streetwear shares the cargo pants and sneakers but is cooler and more graphic. Y2K is the shiniest and most nostalgic of the three.

Is Y2K your aesthetic?

If you collect butterfly clips, love a glossy lip and still know the words to early 2000s pop, you might be Y2K. Take the aesthetic quiz to check your result.
